On June 22, 2024, our community came together for an afternoon filled with art, culture, poetry, music, and shared experiences at UCP’s first Paul Robeson Arts Festival and Pop-Up Museum.
We were treated to fantastic performances by the Marshall Hand & Drum Ensemble, local favorite Tyrone Stackhouse, and award-winning poet Herrin Oum Fontenette. Their talent and energy captivated everyone and highlighted the cultural richness of our festival.
Our museum offerings, included the new "Women of Somerville" installation, celebrating the contributions of our beloved community members and continued the Paul Robeson series. These exhibits beautifully showcased our community’s history and legacy. Interactive activities brought everyone together. The children’s craft station, set up in a cozy shaded area, was a hit with the kids, letting them get creative while their parents explored the indoor exhibits.
We’re grateful to our sponsors: At Home with History, Emman Photography, and the late Karen Jones for their generous support. Emman Photography allowed guests to capture timeless, joyful moments with one rule-one photo had to be full of laughter! Special thanks to our Paul Robeson Alliance partners, Dr. Joy Barnes-Johnson from the Paul Robeson House in Princeton, and Rhonda Stewart from the RVCC Paul Robeson Institute, for their help and presence.
Local artist Lesley Floyd’s generosity was on full display, donating four beautiful oil pieces, including two Paul Robeson portraits. His artwork added a special artistic touch to the festival. Ms. Ian Bryant’s untitled work was also displayed on loan by a community member.
We look forward to growing this event in the years to come, continuing to celebrate our rich cultural heritage and community spirit. UCP hosts pop museum exhibits in the area while it searches for a worthy, permanent home in Somerville, New Jersey.
